Behind the Scenes: Where Fire Country Was Filmed
When it comes to movies, location is everything. It’s why some films are set in beautiful and romantic locations like Italy or France, while others take place in gritty and realistic cities like New York or London. But what about the films that take place in fictional worlds? For those films, the location is just as important, if not more so, than the actual story.
Fire Country is a new movie set in a beautifully stylized world of fire-breathing dragons and samurai warriors. The film was shot onlocation in Japan over the course of two months last year, and we got a chance to chat with director Toshiaki Nakanishi about how he chose his location, what it was like filming there, and some of the challenges he faced along the way.
Nakanishi started out by looking for an all- encompassing setting for his film. He wanted something that would be both visually appealing and historically accurate. “I wanted to find a location that had both these qualities but also had a sense of history to it,” he says. Where is Fire Country Filmed?
Fire Country was filmed on location in the U.S. state of Oregon. The majority of the filming took place in the city of Portland, where many of the city’s iconic landmarks were used for filming purposes. Other scenes were filmed in other parts of Oregon and Washington, including the cities of Eugene, Salem, and Seattle.
The forest where much of the action takes place was located a few hours outside Portland. The actual fire scene was shot at a decommissioned airbase near Salem which had been abandoned for over 20 years.
The Crew
Fire Country was filmed in the towns of Winton, Renmark and Horsham in southern Australia. The towns are known for their rich agricultural history, and have been home to many famous Australian actors and filmmakers.
The Locations
Fire Country was filmed in various locations around the United States. The majority of the filming took place in North Carolina, with a few shots also shot in Tennessee and Virginia.
The small town of Murphy, North Carolina served as the main shooting location for Fire Country. The town is located about an hour north of Charlotte and has a population of just under 1,000 people. The town’s main street was used as the primary filming location for the town square and many of the buildings in Murphy were used for exterior shots of the town’s general store, post office, and sheriff’s office.
Murphy also served as the primary filming location for scenes set inside Magna Carta Holy Grail’s secret underground laboratory. The laboratory was located beneath a large hay barn on the property of producer Mark Johnson’s father-in-law. Filming on this scene required extensive use of miniatures to create both the lab itself and the surrounding environment.
Elsewhere in North Carolina, scenes set at King Arthur’s court were filmed at Historic Jamestowne plantation near Anson County. This plantation played host to sequences set at Camelot castle and during production it was also home to one of America’s first working steam engines.
In Tennessee, scenes set at Fire Country’s rival kingdom Zalar were filmed athistoric Fort Loudoun State Park near Knoxville. The fort played host to scenes set during a royal battle between Fire Country and Zalar as well
